These are some aspects of the game summed up: You buy goods, you move them between your ships and your comercial office, you visit other cities to check their prices, you trade for some money, you think it would be profitable to build a fishery in your city, you do it and sell the fish there to gain money for a while, then other merchant builds a fishery so theres so much fish in that city that its value drops a lot, you hire a captain in a tavern, you stablish a comercial route between your city and another one that cant produce fish, profit!. Patrician III is basically a trading/building/management and overall a strategy game where you start as a humble merchant with a couple of ships and a comercial office in a starting city you previously chose.
The first thing to know is that eventhough the game was designed for 4:3 resolutions there is a pretty straighforward guide on Steam to adapt it to modern 16:9 resolutions (without stretching the image, you actually see a wider area of the map). I've had Patrician III for a long, long time and I installed it a few months back on my PC when I found the box laying around.
It can be a little slow to develop but to me it was more of a gradually unfolding story where I went from an independent trader to being involved with industry, then ruling towns and slowly turning them into major cities while my fleets kept the shipping lanes safe. You can make tons of cash in the short term as an independent trader, you can be a slumlord and corner the market with expensive housing, you can build a vertical monopoly in beer, or you can gradually build your empire by ensuring plentiful supply of reasonably priced goods and housing for all. Then you get involved in events that affect the towns. As you provide more and cheaper goods to the towns, offer reasonable housing prices and generally improve the place, your respect rises in each one and you're invited to participate in governing. It's been a long time since I obsessed over Patrician 3 & 4, but from what I remember, I liked that the focus was on providing well for each town you do business in, rather than making the steepest profit on every trade.
